When a normal working stroke of a hydraulic cylinder is not feasible for the task required, telescopic Hydraulic Cylinder is employed. A telescopic hydraulic cylinder is nested in stages where the effect of the piston is expanded over multiple barrels fitted perfectly in a small main sleeve.
As most telescopic hydraulic cylinders are fitted together within a sleeve, which is almost 20% of the actual working length, they provide a better working stroke. Given its compact size, a telescopic hydraulic cylinder is used when a conventional single-rod hydraulic cylinder is not feasible.
A telescopic hydraulic cylinder works on a similar principle to single- and double-acting hydraulic cylinders. The main difference between the two types is that in telescopic cylinders the piston or barrel is nested in a compact housing along with other tubes which extend together with the extension of the piston or the main barrel.
