Hydraulic tank air breather and filler cap — Honeywell Hydraulics

What Is a Hydraulic Tank Air Breather?

A hydraulic tank air breather (often combined as a filler-breather assembly) is a critical two-way breathing device mounted on top of a hydraulic fluid reservoir. During hydraulic machine operation, as hydraulic cylinders extend and retract, the fluid level inside the reservoir continuously rises and falls.

When cylinders extend, fluid is pumped out of the tank into the circuit, creating an internal partial vacuum that forces external atmospheric air to rush into the reservoir. Conversely, when cylinders retract, fluid surges back into the tank, displacing air outward. Without an efficient air breather, airborne contaminants—including silica dust, grinding particulates, moisture, and ambient factory grime—are sucked directly into the oil, accelerating pump wear and sticking solenoid valve spools.

At Honeywell Hydraulics, we supply high-performance industrial tank breathers featuring multi-layer polyurethane or microglass filter elements rated from 10 to 40 microns. Each unit incorporates a protective splash baffle, a heavy chrome-plated or UV-stabilized nylon cap, an integrated filler basket to strain fresh oil additions, and high-compression cork-nitrile mounting gaskets ensuring zero external oil weepage.

Key Engineering Features of Our Tank Breathers

Engineered for harsh industrial manufacturing environments where air cleanliness directly governs hydraulic reliability.

High-Volume Bi-Directional Airflow

Delivers up to 1,500 liters per minute of unrestricted free air exchange, preventing destructive negative vacuum spikes or reservoir overpressurization during rapid cylinder strokes.

Precision Particulate Retention

High-density pleated polyurethane foam or treated cellulose media captures airborne particles down to 10 microns with minimum air pressure differential.

Corrosion-Resistant Chrome Finish

Heavy-gauge pressed steel cap with mirror-polished chrome plating resists industrial humidity, cutting oil fumes, and outdoor atmospheric degradation.

Anti-Splash Internal Baffle

Built-in internal baffling prevents fluid splashing from escaping through the breather cap during severe return-line turbulence or fluid sloshing.

Removable Deep Filler Strainer Basket

Heavy-duty brass or stainless steel 30-mesh mesh basket strains new hydraulic oil poured into the tank, catching debris from oil barrels and transfer funnels.

Lockable Safety Cap Options

Optional padlockable design prevents unauthorized fluid tampering, cross-contamination with incompatible fluids, or factory floor vandalism.

Engineering & Sizing Considerations for Tank Breathers

Critical fluid mechanics calculations required to select the proper air breather size.

Airflow vs Fluid Flow RateMatching Airflow Capacity to Maximum Cylinder Inrush

Breather airflow rating must exceed the maximum combined instantaneous fluid withdrawal rate of all cylinders operating concurrently. Sizing rule: Airflow Capacity (LPM) ≥ 1.5 × Maximum Simultaneous Pump Flow (LPM).

Ambient Air Particulate LoadSelecting Micron Ratings for Harsh Environments

Standard factory air can use 40 micron polyurethane foam. However, dusty plants (cement, ceramic, foundry, grinding) must specify 10 micron microglass elements to satisfy ISO 4406 fluid cleanliness codes.

Pressure Drop ConstraintsPreventing Reservoir Implosion & Cavitation

A clogged or undersized breather creates high negative tank vacuum, starving pump suction lines and causing pump gear cavitation. Regular element replacement is essential.

Still have questions?

Our engineering team is ready to discuss your specific hydraulic requirements.

When a breather becomes clogged with factory dust, air cannot enter the reservoir as cylinders extend. This creates a strong internal vacuum inside the tank. The hydraulic pump is starved of oil, leading to severe cavitation, loud acoustic whine, rapid gear tooth pitting, and catastrophic pump failure within hours. Conversely, when cylinders retract, air cannot escape, creating overpressurization that blows out tank inspection gaskets and shaft seals.

Polyurethane foam elements can occasionally be washed in petroleum solvent or kerosene, dried, and re-oiled for temporary use. However, treated cellulose paper and microglass elements cannot be washed without breaking the microscopic fiber matrix. We recommend replacing the element cartridge every 6 to 12 months for guaranteed filtration integrity.

The deep wire mesh strainer basket sits directly underneath the filler neck inside the tank. When maintenance personnel add new oil to the reservoir, the basket catches large contamination items such as drum seal fragments, rust flakes from funnels, and packaging dust that frequently contaminate new oil barrels.

The 6-hole mounting pattern is the standard European/DIN specification providing maximum gasket compression and vibration resistance for heavy industrial power packs. The 3-hole pattern is common on compact and mobile hydraulic tanks. We supply universal adapter rings and gaskets accommodating standard tank cutouts.
