Hydraulic oil level and temperature gauge — Honeywell Hydraulics

What Is a Hydraulic Oil Level Gauge?

A hydraulic oil level gauge (also referred to as an oil sight glass, fluid level indicator, or tank level-temperature gauge) is an essential diagnostic accessory bolted directly onto the vertical exterior sidewall of a hydraulic fluid reservoir.

Operating a hydraulic system with insufficient oil volume is catastrophic: when the fluid level drops below the suction inlet pipe, the pump draws in air bubbles, inducing destructive acoustic cavitation, erratic cylinder shuddering, and rapid component seizure. Simultaneously, operating hydraulic fluid above safe thermal limits (typically 50°C to 60°C) accelerates oil breakdown, degrades rubber seals, and drops fluid viscosity below the critical lubrication threshold.

Honeywell Hydraulics level gauges provide an intuitive, maintenance-free solution combining clear visual liquid level monitoring with an embedded bimetallic thermometer strip. Encased in a rugged aluminum or polyamide protective shroud, each gauge features high-contrast contrast lines for MIN/MAX oil thresholds, a white reflective backing plate for clear visibility in dim factory lighting, and precision-machined hollow mounting bolts fitted with high-integrity O-rings ensuring zero oil weeping over years of continuous operation.

Engineering Highlights of Our Hydraulic Level Gauges

Engineered for structural durability, thermal accuracy, and leak-free reliability on industrial machine reservoirs.

High-Contrast Visual Monitoring

Features a white aluminum contrast backing plate with prominent red MIN/MAX indicator lines, allowing operators to verify oil volume at a glance from across the plant floor.

Integrated Dual-Scale Thermometer

Precision bimetallic temperature sensor directly immersed in the sight tube, reading continuous fluid temperature from 0°C to 100°C (32°F to 212°F) without external electrical power.

Impact-Resistant Protective Shroud

Heavy-duty black anodized aluminum alloy or reinforced technopolymer cover protects the transparent sight tube against accidental forklift impacts, tool drops, and mechanical shock.

Zero-Weep Banjo Bolt Sealing

Zinc-plated M10 or M12 hollow mounting bolts equipped with premium NBR or Viton O-rings provide positive radial sealing against raw laser-cut or drilled tank holes.

Standard Industrial Center Spacings

Fully interchangeable with international level gauge models (LG-1 / 76mm, LG-2 / 127mm, LG-3 / 254mm) for seamless drop-in replacement during plant overhauls.

Broad Fluid & Chemical Compatibility

High-transparency polyamide lens material is completely inert to standard mineral hydraulic oils (ISO VG 32 to 68), bio-oils, phosphate esters, and diesel fuel.

Engineering Best Practices for Level Gauge Installation

Guidelines to guarantee accurate thermal readings and zero oil weeping over years of machine operation.

Mounting LocationPositioning Away from High-Velocity Return Inlets

Mount the gauge on the quietest side of the reservoir away from turbulent return-line diffusers and pump suction vortices to ensure stable, non-fluctuating level readings.

Accurate Temperature SensingThermal Immersion Geometry

Ensure the lower gauge mounting bolt remains permanently submerged beneath the MIN operating oil level so the internal bimetallic bulb reads bulk fluid temperature rather than air pocket heat.

Torque DisciplinePreventing Cracking from Over-Torquing

Hollow banjo bolts should be tightened evenly to 8–10 Nm using a torque wrench. Over-tightening crushes the rubber O-rings against the tank wall and can cause hairline stress cracks in the polymer sight tube.

Still have questions?

Our engineering team is ready to discuss your specific hydraulic requirements.

Drill two clean clearance holes (Ø11mm for M10 bolts or Ø13mm for M12 bolts) into the tank wall at the exact specified center-to-center distance (e.g. exactly 127mm for LGT-2). Deburr the holes thoroughly to ensure a smooth sealing face. Insert the hollow mounting bolts with their O-rings from the outside, thread the flanged locknuts from inside the reservoir (or into pre-tapped weld bosses on closed tanks), and tighten evenly to 8–10 Nm.

For most mineral-based hydraulic oils (ISO VG 46/68), the optimal operating temperature range is 40°C to 55°C (104°F to 131°F). Temperatures consistently exceeding 60°C (140°F) drastically accelerate oil oxidation, halve seal lifespan, drop volumetric pump efficiency, and indicate the need for an air or water-cooled heat exchanger.

Standard column level gauges are designed for atmospheric or low-head reservoirs up to 1.5 Bar (22 PSI). For pressurized reservoirs, specialized sealed tubular glass or magnetic float level indicators rated for higher design pressures must be specified.

Our level gauges use high-grade UV-stabilized polyamide designed to resist yellowing and crazing under standard mineral oils. Clouding typically occurs when incompatible synthetic fire-resistant fluids (such as phosphate esters) or aggressive cleaning solvents attack the polymer. For harsh chemical environments, we supply specialty Viton-sealed glass-tube variants on request.
